Intergenerational Planning - Prosperity Financial - If it's money, it's personal.

Intergenerational Planning

Intergenerational Family Wealth Planning is more than just estate planning. The comprehensive nature of complete intergenerational planning is designed to ensure you remain financially independent while accomplishing much more:

– Provide each generation with sound and tax-efficient financial life plans

– Educate your family members about their options and opportunities

– Weigh the pros and cons of lifetime gifting (gifting while you are still alive) vs. leaving an inheritance

– Evaluate whether or not to set up trusts for your heirs

– Determine how to handle charitable gifting

– Reduce estate taxes

– Distribute assets according to your wishes and desired timeline

Done right, family wealth planning can overcome conflict, protect your heirs and assets, and ensure your wishes are carried out.

As a provider of comprehensive financial life planning services we understand these concerns, the complicated dynamics of family relationships, and the importance of planning. It is not just about the transfer of assets or wealth, but also of maintaining and transferring one’s values around finances.

A word about gifting:
As a way to leverage the gifting of assets, we encourage our clients to gift a comprehensive financial life plan to their heirs. Doing so benefits heirs long-term by providing them with a tax-efficient financial plan and educating them about their ongoing options and potential tax liabilities. We maintain everyone’s privacy while providing solutions to complex planning issues that may arise. Of course, different generations and personalities have different goals, needs, and risk tolerances. All of this is taken into account as we develop plans and strategies meant for long-term success.

Tax Planning

Tax Planning is a delicate process. It requires the integration of tax law, investment management, and risk management to achieve overriding goals or objectives. One should focus on the objectives (wealth accumulation, asset transfer, protecting loves ones, etc.) and then use tax planning to optimize the planning. Those who make minimization of taxes as the ultimate goal usually must sacrifice some other objective. This is why “balancing” is necessary—so that tax planning does not become an end itself but only part of the overall wealth management process.Estate Planning For families whose wealth is exposed to death taxes, estate planning is an essential exercise. Wills and trusts can protect against unnecessary taxes. Prudent gifting can help successor generations now while reducing taxes later. Life insurance can provide liquidity to pay for taxes which cannot reasonably be avoided and where family assets are concentrated in non-liquid investments, such as real estate or businesses. Life insurance, however, requires a willingness to part with dollars during lifetime in order to provide significantly greater funds for survivors at death. Is life insurance “expensive”? It depends upon one’s definitions and the consideration of the time value of money. Income tax planning includes multiple factors: Contributing to retirement plans is a trade-off between paying taxes now or later. Sometimes it is better to pay now than later. Balance is a good idea when deciding how much to contribute to retirement plans. Families with significant taxable assets (those created with after-tax dollars) have considerably more flexibility and stability when major sums are required, such as for a vacation, home remodeling, a business opportunity, or a family emergency. Investment management for non-retirement plan accounts should always take taxes into consideration. For years dividends and capital gains subjected one to the maximum tax rates. First, capital gains were given preferential treatment, and then, within the last few

Life Insurance

Life Insurance planning and funding serves various needs.  What if I die to early and my family cannot pay off the mortgage or future education costs?  Can I create a program for leaving my family tax-free money?  Can I find a way to leave my spouse extra tax-free money?  Can I leave a legacy for charity or my personal foundation? How about Estate Planning and Life Insurance? These are just some of the questions that good Life Insurance Planning can address. And, just as important, what type of life insurance will best serve your needs? Permanent Life Insurance  Permanent Life Insurance is a great way to save for your insurance needs while creating a future cash-flow for your and your family.  With Whole-Life Life Insurance, you will create a total amount of insurance that will be paid out while creating another account filled with cash and dividends from the Insurance Carrier.  On the surface, this is more expensive that Term Insurance.  But with the ability to borrow from your cash account tax-free or have the policy fully paid up in just a few years, Whole Life may end up costing you significantly less over your lifetime.  Indexed Universal Life Insurance, works similar to Whole-Life Life Insurance, but rather than receiving dividends from the Insurance Carrier, it receives income from one of many Equity/Bond Indexes. And it has all the same cash/borrowing features of Whole Life. Term Life Insurance Term Insurance means that you intend to keep this Life Insurance in place for a certain term, such as 15-years.  You will lock in your payment, with the ability to cancel anytime by just stopping payments, and with the Insurance Carrier unable to raise your cost for this entire term once the policy is in place.  These are far more popular and

Annuities

You may not be familiar with annuities, but they have rich history dating back to Ancient Rome. In fact, millions of Americans currently use annuities to help their retirement savings grow and to create protected income that can help cover essential expenses and contribute to a more enjoyable retirement. In its simplest terms, an annuity is a contract between an individual (or married couple) and a life insurance company. You can purchase an annuity with a portion of your retirement savings in either a single payment or with multiple payments, depending on the type of annuity. Once you own an annuity, any growth in your account may be on a tax-deferred basis while you continue to have control of your money, as needed. Annuities can be an important part of a diversified retirement portfolio because they can ensure that your retirement income is protected even when there are downturns in the market. So no matter how your other retirement investments perform, annuities can provide you with a source of protected lifetime income that few other financial products can offer. Certian types of annuities offer you the flexibility to receive protected lifetime income while maintaining access to your money. When you’re ready to take income, you may receive payments in a variety of ways depending on your needs and the type of annuity you purchased. You can choose to receive income immediately, or at a later date. Payments can be in lump sums of your choosing, in a series of payments for a specified period of time or you may choose to receive guaranteed payments for as long as you live. Annuities are long-term, tax-deferred investments designed for retirement. Variable annuities are subject to investment risks including the possible loss of principal value. Earnings are taxable as ordinary income when distributed

College Planning

College is generally not a surprise. From the time your children are born, if you suspect they’re going to go to college—and about 68% of high school graduates do—you have 18 years to plan for it. And yet, only two in five families with kids in college made a plan to pay for it, according to Sallie Mae’s most recent How America Pays for College report. That number hasn’t changed significantly since 2010, when Sallie Mae started asking the question. So why not benefit from a certified financial planner’s advice and start preparing for your children’s futures? A 529 plan is a college savings plan that offers tax and financial aid benefits. 529 plans may also be used to save and invest for K-12 tuition in addition to college costs. There are two types of 529 plans: college savings plans and prepaid tuition plans. Almost every state has at least one 529 plan; there is also a 529 plan operated by a group of private colleges and universities. 529 plans are named after Section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC), which was added in 1996 to authorize tax-free status for ‘qualified tuition programs’. Earnings in 529 plans accumulate on a tax-deferred basis and distributions are not taxed federally when used for qualified higher education expenses. The definition of qualified higher education expenses was expanded in 2015 to include computers and in 2017 to include up to $10,000 annually in K-12 tuition. Are 529 plan contributions tax-deductible? Much like a Roth IRA, contributions to a 529 plan are post-tax and are not deductible from federal income taxes. However, over 30 states and the District of Columbia offer state income tax deductions or tax credits for contributions to 529 plans, though you may be restricted to investing in your home state’s
