A Celebration of Our Nationhood
I am always amazed at our incredible country every July 4th.
Even with all of the volatile politics of the last year…
Riots in many cities
COVID shutdowns and deaths
China breathing at our gates
… This 245th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence is no exception.
Did you know?
The Declaration of Independence was designed for multiple audiences: the King, the colonists, and the world.
It was also designed to multitask: it was meant to rally the troops, win foreign allies, and to announce the creation of a new country.
Toward Independence
We hold these trusts to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by the Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
This introductory sentence states the Declaration’s main purpose: to explain the colonists’ right to revolution. In other words, “to declare the causes which impel them to the separation.” Congress had to prove the legitimacy of its cause.
After all, our budding nation had just defied the most powerful nation on Earth. It needed to motivate foreign allies to join the fight.
The King of England, George III, declared all these signors enemies of the Crown and subject to losses of all family fortunes and death or imprisonment. Just an amazing feat of “Give me liberty or give me death.”
These are amazing words that have endured for almost two and a half centuries with all of us being very imperfect with flawed decisions and outcomes. However, we remain strong and standing tall.
The actual bill was signed on July 2nd, 1776, in Philadelphia by the members of the Continental Congress, drafted primarily by Thomas Jefferson.
On this Independence Day, let us celebrate our awesome freedoms. Let Sunday be more than just about hot dogs and hamburgers, baseball games or fireworks. Let us take in the air of liberty, and let us relish in the pursuit of happiness.
